5 signs that you need a career mentor
Over the years, I’ve observed people that are feeling unfulfilled and frustrated in their present job. However, this does not need to be the case, work can be fulfilling and fun if you find the right one that matches your skill set and motivations.
When you are at an early stage in your career, it may be difficult to know what exactly it is that you are looking for and the sort of role that suits you, as you are still trying to gain experience.
Here are some of the common signs that you may be stuck in a rot and need expert mentor advice to help you have a rewarding career.
Your job makes you miserable
There are some stressful days at work that may leave you feeling tired and drained. This is normal. But if this happens every day, then it’s time to do a bit of soul searching to ascertain why you feel miserable. Do you have the right skills and experience for the job? Does the job make use of your strengths? Is your organisation’s values aligned with yours? If the answers to these questions are No, then it is time to reconsider a different path.
You feel like you are in a dead-end
Does your current employment allow room for growth? If your current role doesn’t give you the opportunity to progress and gain new skills, then it might be time to find opportunities where you can continue to develop and grow as you probably don’t want to be stuck doing one thing till you retire. The world is dynamic, and change is the only constant thing, therefore staying ahead and learning new skills to future proof your career is the way to go.
You don’t feel motivated by work
Although there’s more to life than work, your current job should give you a sense of meaning and motivation. You want to get up each morning and feel motivated to contribute and add value at work. When you constantly feel drained and you are not energised by your work, then work feels like a burden. It is important that you take time to find a job that matches with your ambitions and your skill set.
You are working there just because of the money
This is a common excuse for staying in an unfulfilling job. Having a well-paid job may serve as an initial motivation but after a while if the job itself is not fulfilling, it is likely that resentment and frustration will set in which will rob you off motivation. Money is important but when your only motivation for staying in the job is the money, then you need to have a rethink.
You hate your Job
This is a bit obvious. There are certain aspects of a job which may not be exciting but if you find every bit of your job to be a source of misery then you need to take a pause to understand why this is the case. It may be that you don’t have the right skills, or the work environment does not inspire you or you are in the wrong job.
